Pastor Roger A. Taber

October 2, 1947 — February 21, 2022

Pastor Roger A. Taber of Cuba, Missouri was born on Thursday, October 2, 1947 in Sullivan, Missouri to the union of Everett E. and Loretta Jane (Durbin) Taber. He left from this life on Monday, February 21, 2022 at his home at the age of 74.

Roger was united in marriage to Janet on March 8, 1968 in Bourbon, Missouri. Together they raised four children Shari, Jodi, Gabriel, and Vanessa.

Roger worked as the Manager of Great Plains Gas in Cuba and Park Hills for sixteen years. He served as a Police Officer for the City of Cuba, Dispatcher for the Crawford County Sheriff’s Department, Insurance Salesman, Funeral Director, Dump Truck Driver, Box Truck Driver but his greatest accomplishment was preaching the word of the Lord.

Roger came to the Lord and was saved in May of 1966 and never looked back. He ran from the calling to preach for a few years, just filling the pulpit for pastors occasionally when they were absent. But in 1988 he began studying for the ministry, and in 1989 he was licensed as an exorter. He was almost immediately offered a small church to pastor and the people loved him. Through 7 years of continued study and pastoring, he became an Ordained Bishop in the Church of God. For 23 years he Pastored the Potosi Church of God, from there he returned to his hometown to pastor Covenant Praise Church of God for 2 years before retiring for health reasons. Retirement couldn’t keep him for long, and he went to work for a dear friend driving a truck for 7 years until Aug 2021, then worked one final day in Jan 2022. He was still called upon by various pastors to come and preach, and he delivered his last sermon in Jan 2022 at Covenant Praise Church of God. His love of horses and riding was rekindled in 1999 which he continued until last summer. Some of you may remember his prancing horse “Sonny”. In his last parade, he could only sidestep a little, and Roger was heartbroken when Sonny died. His oldest daughter said, “Daddy’s a real cowboy because he rides horses, plays guitar, and sings.“ His other love was Mission work which took him overseas, perilous places, and to Indian reservations. He liked to water ski when he was younger and was still an excellent swimmer. He always had a smile and a joke ready. Last but certainly not least, he was passionate about his family, and he loved us dearly, especially the children.

Roger is preceded in death by his parents Everett E. and Loretta Jane (Durbin) Taber; one brother Everett Taber; parents-in-law Lindell and Betty (Lee) Staples.

Those who are left to treasure his memory and to continue his legacy are his loving wife of fifty-five years Janet (Staples) Taber of Cuba; four children Shari (Chris) Alligood of West Palm Beach, Florida, Jodi (John) Cook of St. James, Gabe (Michelle) Taber of Potosi and Vanessa Taber (and family) of Nashville, Tennessee; five grandchildren Kayla, Seth, Dylan, Justin and Eli; four great-grandchildren Natana, Willow, Atraeus and Amelia; one sister Linda Kay (Larry) Branson of Keysville; one sister-in-law Wilma Taber of Cherryville; two brothers-in-law Lenny (Nancy) Staples of Cuba, Kenneth (Mert) Staples of Cuba; Cousins, nieces, nephews and many friends.
