Martha Helen Cross

Martha Helen Cross of Northampton, MA a former resident of Goleta, CA, Lawrenceville, GA and Greenfield, MA left from this life on Thursday, January 31, 2013 at the Calvin Coolidge Nursing Home in Northapton, MA from complications of Alzheimer's at the age of 91. Martha was born on January 28, 1922 in Bourbon, Missouri to Ernest and Minnie Chapman. After her birth the family later moved to Cuba, Missouri where her parents raised strawberries. She married William E. Cross, Jr. in 1948, and lived as a Marine Corps wife for nearly 30 years before her husband retired to Goleta, CA. He taught school there for his second career. He died in 1995 and is buried in Arlington Cemetery. After his passing, Martha lived in Lawrenceville, GA, Caldwell, NJ and later Greenfield, MA. Martha was preceded in death by her parents; three brothers and four sisters Ernest, John, Hilma, Clayton, Nora, Dora and Olive Chapman. Those who are left to treasure her memory and to continue her legacy are her two sons William S. Cross of Montclair, NJ and Andrew E. Cross of Turners Falls, MA; three grandchildren, nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews and friends. Graveside service will be held on Friday, February 8, 2013 10:00 a.m. at the Delhi Cemetery, Cuba, Missouri. She will be buried next to parents and among generations of Chapman's extending back into the early 1800's when her ancestors relocated to Missouri from Caroline County Virginia. The Mizell Funeral Home is honored to be serving the Cross family.
