Lorna Jean Hines

Lorna Jean Hines, 93, of Cuba, Missouri, passed away peacefully at her home surrounded by family on August 23, 2025.

She was born on March 27, 1932, in St. Louis, Missouri, to William and Pearl (Sharlow)Etter, and grew up in the St. Louis area. After moving to Cuba in 1974, Lorna worked for Mid America Shoe before discovering her passion for home healthcare, where she devoted more than 35 years to serving families in Cuba and St. Louis. Even after retiring, she continued caring for others by babysitting her great-grandchildren and many neighborhood children. One of her proudest accomplishments was lovingly caring for her parents until their passing.

Lorna will be remembered for her caring nature, her sense of humor, and her comforting presence. She enjoyed music and her collection of old records, reading, and traveling with family. She loved playing with her grandchildren and was always entertaining them. She was a great cook and especially known for her homemade potato soup. She spoiled her grandkids by rocking and singing her soothing lullabies to put them to sleep, and for her storytelling—most memorably the tale of “Messy Bessie.” Her laughter was contagious, the stories of her life kept you wanting to hear more, and her love was a constant source of comfort to all who knew her.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her daughter, Victoria Lynn Hines; her son, Robert McCormick; her sisters, Marion Sutherlin and Doris Sanders; her brother, Guy Etter; and her grandchildren, Brian Shelton, Brent McCallum, and Brandon McCallum.

She is survived by Dennis Pollard of Cuba, Missouri; Leona (Jimmie) McCallum of Cuba, Missouri; Pamela Jones of Cuba, Missouri; Cynthia (David) Keiser of Frisco, Texas; Linda Stoll and Diane of Higginsville, Missouri; Donald (Pat) Pollard of California; her sisters Betty McCormick of Omaha, Nebraska; Martha Sexton of St. Louis, Missouri; and her brother, William (Chelair) Etter of Grapevine, Texas.

She is also survived by her grandchildren: Brandy Shelton (Andrew Nickelson) and Bradley Shelton (Goldie), both of Cuba, Missouri; Tracy Jones of Columbia, Missouri; Abigayle Keiser of Denver, Colorado; and Beth Ann McCoy of St. Louis, Missouri. Great-grandchildren include Meagan Henke, Ellyn Nickelson, River Nickelson, Jarrett Shelton, McKenna Shelton, Zoey Shelton, and Madelyn Thompson, all of Cuba, Missouri; along with Uriah and Jade Thompson of Columbia, Missouri.

Lorna was blessed to see five generations and is survived by her great-great-grandchildren: Chantz, Liana, Zaylen, Gabby, and baby Everett (expected soon).

Lorna’s life was a blessing to all who knew her. Her legacy of love, care, comfort, and laughter will forever remain in the hearts of her family and friends.
