James A. 'Jim' Mezo

October 10, 1936 — January 20, 2019

James A. "Jim" Mezo of Cuba, Missouri was born Saturday, October 10, 1936 at McLeansboro, Illinois to the union of John W. and Geneva (Nee: Deitz) Mezo. He left from this life, surrounded by family, on Sunday, January 20, 2019 at Cuba Manor at the age of 82 years. Jim worked for Jewel Tea in St. Charles, Missouri for thirty years as a salesman. After retiring from sales, he went to work for Francis Howell School District as a custodian. In 1999 Jim was united in marriage to Ginny Moore and they moved to Cuba. After moving to Cuba, Jim worked for the United States 2000 Census and for the last eighteen years, Jim worked for the Crawford County RII School District as a part-time custodian. Jim was an avid sports fan, especially the St. Louis Cardinals. Jim attended many high school basketball games during his life-time and he coached baseball and basketball when his sons were young. He was the Ping Pong and Washer Champion and he spent hours working on his yard. If you drove past their home, during the Christmas holiday, it was always the prettiest decorated house on the road. He was a devout member of the Cuba Free Will Baptist Church and always attended every function there. What Jim loved most in life was spending time with his family, friends and his dog Dallas. Jim was a loving son, brother, husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather, step father, step grandfather, step great grandfather, brother-in-law, uncle, great uncle and friend of many. He will be truly missed by all who knew and loved him. He is preceded in death by his parents John and Geneva Mezo, step son Michael Scott Moore, eight siblings; Bill and wife Carol Barker, Jean Necica, John Wilson Mezo, Mary and husband Lowell Martin, Ira B. Mezo, Lois and husband Troy Hooker, Tom Sempsrott and David Sempsrott and other family and friends. Those who are left to treasure his memory and to continue his legacy are his loving wife Ginny Mezo of the home, five children; Cyndi Surls of St. Louis, Dan and wife Jan Mezo of Union, Missouri, Shari Mezo, Beverly Mezo and Steve Mezo all of St. Louis, two step children; Cindy and husband Jim Jordan of DeSoto and Alan and wife Sue Moore of Troy, Missouri, six grandchildren; Tasha Mezo of St. Louis, Adam Surls of St. Louis, Amber Reeves of Union, Brad Mezo of Union, Christina Farrelly of St. Louis and CJ Farrelly of St. Louis, two great grandchildren; Declan Surls and Colton James Farrelly both of St. Louis, twelve step grandchildren: Lisa and husband Jason Glaspie of Madison, Wisconsin, Chrysti and husband Neil Safie of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Bobby Moore of Madison, Wisconsin, Michael Moore of Madison, Wisconsin, Joey Jordan of Fenton, Joshua and wife Sarah Jordan of Auburn, Illinois, Jessica Jordan of Cadet, Missouri, Justin and wife Bridgett Jordan of DeSoto, Angela and husband Joseph Thames of Troy, Missouri, Hannah Moore of Troy, Charles and wife Mel Bailey of Union, RJ and wife Tami Bailey of Union, twenty five step great grandchildren, one brother Robert "Bob" Mezo of McLeansboro, Illinois, one sister Nancy and husband Ron Markel of West Virginia, nieces, nephews, great nieces, great nephews and a host of other relatives and friends. Visitation will be Tuesday, January 22, 2019 from 5:00 till 8:00 p.m. at the Mizell Funeral Home, 904 W Washington Street, Cuba. Funeral service will be 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, January 23, 2019 at the Mizell Funeral Home with Pastor Don Martin officiating and Shari Mezo sharing special memories. Special recorded music will be "Precious Memories", "The Old Rugged Cross" and "Wayfaring Stranger". Interment and prayers will follow at the Kinder Cemetery, Cuba. Honored to serve as casket bearers are Adam Surls, Brad Mezo, CJ Farrelly, Mike Mezo, Justin Jordan and Joey Jordan. Memorial contributions may be made to the Cuba Free Will Baptist Church,707 W Myrtle, Cuba, Missouri in Jim's memory. The Mizell Funeral Home of Cuba is honored to be serving the Mezo family.
