Helen Jean Spurgeon-Storie of Cuba, Missouri was born Tuesday, May 17, 1927 at Paragould, Arkansas to the union of Ruffes Harmon and Myrtle May (Nee: Winn) Fletcher and went home to be the with the Lord on Wednesday, September 20, 2017 at Phelps County Regional Medical Center, Rolla, Missouri at the age of 90 years. Helen was united in marriage to Harold Lee Spurgeon August of 1963 and were the proud parents of Christopher Lee and Jeanne Lynn. Harold passed away on July 2, 1984. She was then united in marriage to Emerson Storie, January of 1991 and he passed away October of 2002. Helen spent her life taking care of her home and family. For many years she cleaned houses for the St. Louis Blues owner and players. After moving to Cuba, she continued cleaning for businesses and many families of the area. Helen loved life, loved having fun and loved to laugh. You could always find Helen at the rowdy table at the Cuba Senior Center when her health was good. Helen was well known for her cooking, especially her homemade buns, sugar cookies, lemon meringue pie and her pumpkin rolls. She thought if you were cooking for the holidays, you started three weeks early. She would help everyone that she could and would go without just so that others would have. She truly had a heart of gold. Helen never met a stranger and would talk to everyone. She read her bible daily and through the course of her life she had read the bible cover to cover three times. Helen was devout in her faith and attended the Freewill Baptist Church of Cuba for many years until her health began to decline. Helen was a loving daughter, sister, wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother, aunt, great aunt, great-great aunt, step mother, step grandmother and friend of many. She will be truly missed by all who knew and loved her. She is preceded in death by her parents Harmon and Myrtle May Fletcher, husbands Harold Spurgeon and Emerson Storie, five brothers Vernon Fletcher, Burle Fletcher, Randall "Dutch" Fletcher, Stirl Fletcher and Billy Fletcher and other family and friends. Those who are left to treasure her memory and to continue her legacy are her loving son Chris and wife Tammy Spurgeon of Cuba, daughter Jeanne Lynn Ryerson of Cuba, four grandsons; Cody and wife Lindsay Spurgeon of St. Clair, Barry and wife Melissa Wools of St. James, Brian and wife Sherry Wools of Cuba and Josiah Hinson of Cuba, four great grandchildren; Avery Spurgeon of St. Clair, Olivia Wools of St. James, Kailey Wools and Gavin Wools both of Cuba, five step children; Charles Storie, Tracy Storie and Flora Schofield all of Buckhorn, Missouri, Dennis and wife Brenda Spurgeon and David and wife Cindy Spurgeon all of Rolla, step grandchildren; Denver Spurgeon, Derek Spurgeon, Damon Spurgeon, Megan Spurgeon and Monica Lyle, nieces, nephews, great nieces, great nephews, great-great nieces, great-great nephews and a host of other relatives and friends. Visitation will be Monday, September 25, 2017 from 5:00 till 8:00 p.m. at the Mizell Funeral Home, 904 W Washington Street, Cuba. Funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, September 26, 2017 at the Mizell Funeral Home of Cuba with Pastor Don Martin officiating. Special music will be "I Want the People to see Jesus in Me", "God on the Mountain" and "Jesus Take the Wheel". Interment and prayers will follow at the Meramec Hills Cemetery, Cuba. Honored to be serving as pall bearers will be Cody Spurgeon, Barry Wools, Brian Wools, Josiah Hinson, Wesley Gilliam and Kaleb "Gunner" Wilkerson. Memorial contributions may be made to the Free Will Baptist Church, 707 Myrtle, Cuba, or the Cuba Senior Center, 206 N Smith St., Cuba, in Helen's memory. The Mizell Funeral Home of Cuba is honored to be serving Helen's family.
