Erma B. Eaton Thurmond

June 5, 1923 — August 28, 2013

Erma B. Eaton Thurmond of Cuba, Missouri was born June 5, 1923 at Seaton, Missouri to the union of Frank and Mary (Nee: Hatcher) Happel and left from this life on Wednesday, August 28, 2013 at Cuba Manor at the age of 90 years. Erma was united in marriage to John E. Eaton in 1938 at Steelville and to this union ten children were born; Johnny, Helen, Mary, Maxine, Gerald, Lloyd, Peg, David, Glenda and Bertha. John passed away in 1993 and in 1995 Erma was united in marriage to Kenneth Thurmond and he passed away in 2007. Erma spent her life taking care of her home, raising her ten children, gardening, canning, sewing, quilting, embroidering and mushroom hunting. She made quilts for her family and always enjoyed listening to music especially Elvis's Christian music. In her older years she enjoyed word puzzles, going to the Cuba Senior Center and spending hours and hours with her children and her grandchildren. Erma was a loving daughter, sister, wife, mother, mother-in-law, grandmother, great grandmother, great-great grandmother, sister-in-law, aunt, great aunt and friend of many. She will be truly missed by all who knew and loved her. Erma is preceded in death by her parents Frank and Mary Happel, husbands John Eaton and Kenneth Thurmond, one daughter Bertha Taber, two grandchildren Sherry Callahan and Sara Taber, one son-in-law Paul Myers, one daughter-in-law Shirley Eaton, one brother Charles Happel, one sister Catherine Grushwan and other relatives and friends. Those who are left to treasure her memory and to continue her legacy are her loving children Johnny Eaton of Steelville, Helen and husband Ken Pyatt of Owensville, Mary and husband Claude Pyatt of Cuba, Maxine Myers of Cuba, Gerald and wife Susie Eaton of Cuba, Lloyd and wife Carol Eaton of Cuba, Peg and husband Junior Callahan of Steelville, David and wife Angie Eaton of Cuba, Glenda and husband Joe Stubblefield of Cuba, son-in-law Dean Taber of St. James, step son Tom and wife Linda Isaac of St. James, seventeen grandchildren; Johnny, Michael, Rick, Karen, Donna, Debbie, Patrick "PJ", Michelle, Shawn, Matt, Jeff, Joe, Leroy, Leon, Lucas, Mark and Jason, thirty three great grandchildren, two brothers Louis and wife Mary Happel of Cuba and Ken and wife France Happel of St. James, five sisters Lola and husband Jack Bartle, Pearl Norris, Mary Lou Martin all of St. James and Norma Russau of Carthage, Missouri, seven great-great grandsons, nieces, nephews, great nieces, great nephews and a host of other relatives and friends. Visitation will be Friday, August 30, 2013 from 4 till 8 PM at the Mizell Funeral Home, 904 W Washington, Cuba, Missouri. Funeral service will be 10:00 AM Saturday, August 31, 2013 at the Mizell Funeral Home of Cuba with the Pastor Don Martin and Bro. John Ripley. Special music will be "Stroll Across Heaven with You" by David Callahan and "Precious Memories" by Elvis. Honored to be serving as pall bearers will be grandsons; Johnny, Michael, Rick, Pat, Shawn, Matt, Jeff, Joe, Leroy, Leon, Lucas, Jason and Mark. Interment and prayers will follow at the New Home Cemetery, Steelville, Missouri. Memorial contributions may be made to the Cuba Senior Center in Erma's memory. The Mizell Funeral Home is honored to be serving Erma's family.
