Obituary

Diane M. (Michalik) Hughes-Sparks, 82, of Cuba, Missouri passed away peacefully on Sunday, March 1, 2026, surrounded by her family, leaving behind a legacy of love, laughter, and devotion to family and friends.

Diane was born on January 28, 1944, in St. James, Missouri. She dedicated many years of service to Meramec Electric, where she built a long and respected career. Outside of work, she embraced life’s simple joys. She loved the beach looking for shark’s teeth, indulging in crab legs, and trying her luck at the casino. She was a devoted fan of the St. Louis Cardinals and rarely missed cheering them on.

Diane had a special love for flowers and spent many peaceful hours tending to her garden and watching the birds she adored. She was a wonderful cook, famous among family and friends for making the very best fried chicken. Above all, Diane treasured time spent with her family, creating memories that will be cherished for generations.

In her later years, Diane made her home at Victorian Place, where she formed many close friendships and continued to share her warmth and kindness with those around her.

Diane’s love, strength, and vibrant spirit will live on in the hearts of all who knew and loved her.

Diane was preceded in death by her parents, Joe and Helen Michalik; her first husband, Jim Hughes; her second husband, Sonny Sparks; and her youngest son, Thomas J. Hughes. She was also preceded in death by her brother in-law, Michael Gary Jett.

She is lovingly remembered by her children: James “Jim” Hughes and his wife, Kelly; Cheri Hughes; and Carolyn Sanazaro and her husband, Dan. She was a proud and devoted grandmother to six grandchildren: Jordan Hansel and her husband, Tony; Lane Sanazaro and his wife, Jessi; Catie Johnson and her husband, Seth; Lacey Sanazaro (Bryer); Cameron Hughes (Alexis); and Braiden Hughes. She was also blessed with three great-grandchildren: William Hansel, Katherine Hansel, and Calliope Hughes.

Diane is also survived by her loving sister, Donna Jett, and will be fondly remembered by her dear friend, Ron, along with many extended family members, three step-grandchildren, and friends whose lives she touched.
